About Darul Uloom New York

Established in 1997 and incorporated in 1998, Darul Uloom New York set out to build a place where our children could learn about Islam in a simple, down-to-earth way while also getting a good education in regular school subjects. Our goal has always been to shape future Muslim scholars who understand their faith and the world around them.

Living as Muslims in a society where most people aren’t can be tough, but we believe it’s something we all need to take seriously. Since we started, we’ve had between 300 to 500 students from across the country join us each semester.

We’re proud to say that our efforts have paid off. Over the years, we’ve helped:

  • 200+ (BOYS & GIRLS) become HAFIZ (those who’ve memorized the Quran)
  • 166  (BOYS & GIRLS) become AALIM (Islamic scholars)
  • 9 (boys) become Muftis (experts in Islamic law)

These achievements show that we’re on the right track in preparing the leaders of tomorrow.

Whoever seeks knowledge and help other people to learn get enormous rewards from Allah (SWT).

“Allah will exalt those who believe among you, and those who have been granted knowledge to high ranks.”

(Qur’an 58:11)

01 Alim / Alimah Course

An Alim/Alima is someone who undergoes rigorous study in Islamic theology, jurisprudence, and related subjects, typically in specialized institutions known as madrasas. Becoming an Alim/Alima usually takes several years of intensive study, often ranging from four to eight years, depending on the curriculum and the pace of learning.

Upon completing their studies, Alims/Alimas are equipped with deep knowledge of Islamic teachings and are qualified to teach, preach, or provide religious guidance within their communities. After becoming an Alim/Alima, individuals may serve as religious leaders, teachers, scholars, or imams in mosques, schools, or other Islamic institutions, guiding others in matters of faith and practice.

It was narrated from Abu Huraira that:

“The messenger of Allah (SWAS) said:
“Whoever travels a path in search of

knowledge, Allah will make easy

for him a path to Paradise.”
(Or in this case whosoever

provides a path to

knowledge)

02 Hafiz / Hafiza Course

Hifz/Hafiza refers to the process of memorizing the entire Quran word for word, which involves dedicated recitation, repetition, and memorization under the guidance of a qualified teacher. Becoming a Hafiz/Hafiza typically takes several years, with students spending hours each day memorizing and reviewing Quranic verses until they have committed the entire text to memory.

Upon completing Hifz, individuals are considered Hafiz/Hafiza and are highly respected within the Muslim community for their achievement. After becoming a Hafiz/Hafiza, individuals often continue to recite and review the Quran regularly to maintain their memorization, and they may also teach others, lead prayers, or participate in religious ceremonies.

The Prophet stressed the value of applying the teachings of the Quran in daily life.

He said, “The best among you
(Muslims) are those who
learn the Qur’an
and teach it”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 4739).

03 Nazraa Course

Nazra involves the recitation and study of the Quran with a focus on correct pronunciation, intonation, and understanding of the text, usually under the guidance of a qualified teacher. Nazra can be completed over a period of several months to a few years, depending on the individual’s pace of learning and the depth of study desired.

After completing Nazra, individuals may continue to recite and study the Quran regularly, participate in religious gatherings, and use their knowledge to teach others or lead prayers in mosques or community settings.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,

“The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honorable
and obedient scribes (angels) and
he who recites the Qur’an and finds
it difficult to recite, doing his
best to recite it in the best
way possible, will have
a double reward”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 4937).
